Pope Francis: 'Love between a man and a woman ... is not made in a day'

Image
Speaking off the cuff to the many engaged couples gathered Wednesday in St. Peter's Square for his weekly audience, Pope Francis said that a lifetime love takes time to grow. "The alliance of love between a man and a woman, an alliance for life, cannot be improvised, and is not made in a day," the Pope said. Francis spoke a day after his top deputy, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, referred to Ireland's vote this week in favor of gay marriage as "a defeat for humanity." There was no indication, however, that the Pope's message to the betrothed referred in any way to the Irish vote. He did speak to the importance of couples using their engagement periods to "come to know one another better in planning for the beautiful yet demanding enterprise of marriage." Pope's 'angel' remark sparks devilish debate He also argued implicitly against premarital sex. "The Church, in her wisdom, maintains t...

Rihanna and Karrueche

Image
So sweet! Surprisingly, there’s no bad blood between Chris Brown’s exes, Rihanna and Karrueche. During a May 26 interview, Karrueche said she thinks Rihanna is ‘beautiful,’ and Rihanna thinks her comment is ‘flattering.’ When we first heard Karrueche Tran say that Rihanna is “beautiful” during a May 26 interview, we couldn’t believe our ears. Rihanna Reacts To Karrueche Tran’s ‘Big Boy In The Morning’ Interview “When you are called beautiful, that is only a nice thing! Who is not going to accept that? [Rihanna thinks] it’s flattering,” a source close to the “Bitch Better Have My Money” singer reveals.

Nebraska has abolished death penalties

Image
The US state of Nebraska has abolished the death penalty after a veto-override was passed through its legislature. The measure was backed by a coalition of conservatives who oppose execution as a form of punishment. Nebraska joins 18 other states and the federal district of Washington, DC, in banning capital punishment, and is the first traditionally conservative state in four decades to do so. The state has not executed an inmate since a 1997 electrocution. The unicameral legislature passed the measure 30 to 19 - the exact number of votes needed to override Governor Pete Ricketts earlier veto. Some of the lawmakers said that they support the death penalty in principle, but said that legal obstacles meant the state would be unable to carry out executions in the future. A Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman said her agency was investigating death threats made against a state senator who supported the measure. Ten men are on currently Nebraska's death row. The s...

The Jonathan finale: No fuel, No electricity....

Nigeria will usher in President Muhammadu Buhari tomorrow. Muhammadu Buhari’s inauguration should potentially, open up new vistas of development for our country. And if the new administration stays true to promises made during the campaign that preceded the elections, we should see some positive changes in the general situation in our country. There was no denying the fact that most Nigerians who voted Buhari saw in the man, his lifestyle and avowed commitment to fight corruption amongst other promises, someone who could provide the leadership for the process of change that Nigerians believe was essential to arrest the drift that we have witnessed under President Goodluck Jonathan. Yet, it is also part of the contradictions of contemporary Nigeria, that Buhari will inherit power at a time when Nigeria’s indices have worsened and the resources available to drive the process of change have drastically reduced. Buhari is about to inherit presidency at a moment of incredible ...

14 banks on edge over new cash reserve policy

Image
About 14 banks may have landed at the receiving end of the Cash Reserve Requirement, CRR, harmonisation policy announced last week by the Monetary Policy Committee, MPC, of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. About nine banks are benefiting from the policy change. CRR simply specifies the proportion of a bank’s deposit that must be reserved, thus specifying the limit of cash banks can lend out of its total deposits. For this purpose banks’ deposits are divided into public sector and private sector with 75 percent reserve imposed on public sector deposits, while 20 percent was imposed on private sector deposits up until last week. However, MPC rose from its second quarter meeting last Tuesday harmonising the two by crashing public sector CRR to 31 percent, while hiking the private sector CRR to same level. Effectively the decision threw most banks that do not have substantial public sector deposits into difficult liquidity position, while also giving broader resources to...

Sambisa Forest: Army dismisses 200 soldiers for cowardice

Image
The Nigeria Army at the Rukuba Barracks in Jos, Plateau State, has dismissed about 200 soldiers from service for their failure to capture the Sambisa Forest, a notorious hideout for Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State. They were dismissed for laxity and cowardice in the course of duty. One of the affected soldiers, Aguloye Sunday, an indigene of Ondo State, who confirmed the dismissal to journalists in Jos, said they were arraigned on a two-count charge of “failure to perform military duty and disobedience to standing order.” He, however, argued that they would seek redress in court as the charges pressed against him and his colleagues were “untrue, false and malicious.” Denying the claim by the army authorities that the soldiers abandoned their duties and ran away, Mr Sunday explained that sufficient weapons were not provided for them to fight the terrorists and, therefore, they ran out of weapons. He also said the weapons provided for the troops were obsolete...
