Jonathan’s officials introduced corruption to arms purchase – Buhari:
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday regretted that the procurement of equipment for the nation’s Armed Forces, which hitherto had followed due process under successive governments, got stuck in the mucky water of corruption under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He, however, said his administration was taking urgent and appropriate actions to restore sanity, due process and probity to the arms procurement processes. Buhari said this while receiving the British Secretary of State for Defence, Mr. Michael Fallon, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. “They (officials of the last administration) just put foreign exchange in a briefcase and travelled to procure equipment for the military. That is why we have found ourselves in the crisis we are now facing,” a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, quoted the President as saying at the meeting held behind closed-door.
Welcoming the offer by the British Government to assist Nigeria in defence equipment procurement, intelligence gathering and training, Buhari restated his conviction that the international community must collaborate more and work with greater unity of purpose to overcome global terrorism.
