Toothpaste theft lands man in prison
A 25-year-old man was on Tuesday sentenced to eight months imprisonment by an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court for stealing toothpaste and other items in a shop in Dutse, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). David Haruna of Zone 5, Dutsen Alhaji, was convicted for joint act, shop breaking, mischief and theft, offences that contradict sections 79, 348, 324 and 288 of the Penal Code. The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that the complainant, Gabriel Okri of Zone 6, Dutsen Alhaji, on December 11, reported at the Dutsen Alhaji Police Station, of how the accused and two others presently at large, on same date, conspired, broke into his shop and stole N30,000 and properties valued at N5,000. He said the accused also destroyed his wall valued at N50, 000. According to the prosecutor, some of the items, including wine, Dettol soap, toothpaste and body spray, were recovered from the accused during investigation.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight months imprisonment by the judge, Mohammed Marafa with an option of N10, 000 fine.
The court also ordered him to pay a compensation of N79, 348.
